Student loans are heavily subsidised by tax payers and are underwritten by the government. That is why they are only available to qualified applicants. For example, an international student in the UK does not qualify for a student loan.
Students are a very poor credit risk. An unsecured loan that is made on the open market will carry an extremely high interest rate (think credit card type numbers).
Then again, if you want it to be non-interest paying for three years, that will be wrapped into the original loan which could easily have doubled by the time you start repaying.
If you are not able to qualify for tax-payer subsidised loans and the university you are applying to is not so enchanted by you that they want to offer you financial aid, you really only have two choices; pay cash or study where you do qualify.
