Most payday loan companies are not licensed or heavily regulated – it really depends which state you live in.
However, you did sign a contract with the company and they can ruin your credit – which means higher credit card interest rates, no car loan and no mortgages.
They can also take you to court and try and get your possesions and/or bank accounts.
Pay them back and never use them again – they are just loan sharks!
