Can you still get federal student loans if you have bad credit?

I want to go back to school so I can get better jobs and have more money. I have really bad credit though. I know private lenders won’t touch me, but what about government loans?

you should see if you could file a FAFSA–Free Application for Federal Student Aid. you could be eligible for some federal student loans this way.

another way to bypass poor credit is to have a credit-worthy cosigner. that always helps.

With Federal Stafford Loans, it doesn’t matter your credit.

With private loans, it does matter about your credit. If you need these, you can also get a co-signer (usually your parents), if they have good credit. Also consider PLUS loans.

In order to get the best Fin Aid, try to apply before February 1st or Feb 15th for FAFSA. You can use last year estimates, too, just as long as nothing drastically changed.

And, if you are under 24, aren’t married and/or don’t have children: YOU HAVE TO FILE YOUR PARENTS’ TAXES, TOO! No matter what! Even if you don’t live with them, or haven’t talked to them in years, or if they refuse or whatever! If you don’t, you don’t get Federal Aid.

If you can’t, try talking to your Financial Aid Office at your school. Sometimes they can override it.
